Five file for city council

Five individuals, including three incumbents, have filed to run for city council seats in Vandalia.
But no one has expressed an interest in the aldermanic seat that is currently vacant.
City Clerk Peggy Bowen reported on Monday afternoon that those filing nominating petitions for the April consolidated election include incumbents Neil Clark in Ward I, Russ Stunkel in Ward II and B. John Clark.
At this time, Neil Clark is the only one of the three incumbents to face opposition, with Kenneth Hubler and Christine Helinski also filing nominating petitions.
There are currently no candidates in Ward III, a seat that was held by Terry Beesley up until Beesley walked out of the council’s Nov. 3 meeting, then resigned later that month.
Mayor Rick Gottman has yet to appoint someone to the vacancy created by Beesley’s resignation. His appointee will serve Ward III residents, those living south of Randolph Street and west of Eighth Street, until the April 7 election.
