? Evans Public Library will hold Fantastic Friday at 4 p.m. Children ages 5-10 are invited to listen to stories and decorate a pumpkin. Registration is required; to register, stop by the library or call 283-2824.
? The Vandalia Swimming Pool staff will hold a haunted house at the former Washington School on South Eighth Street from 7-11 p.m. Admission is $6 per person. All proceeds will go to the pool renovations.
Saturday, October 25

? The Vandals Sports Boosters will hold their inaugural Spooktacular 5K run and fun run/walk this Saturday. Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Rogier Park pavilion at the top of the Lincoln Loop Walking Path, and the run and fun run/walk begin at 9 a.m. For more information, see Page 2B or contact Malinda Nestleroad at 339-7316 or by email at [email protected]
? FAYCO will hold a book fair from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Vandalia Moose Lodge. All books are $1. This is a major fundraiser to benefit FAYCO clients and its recycling program. The Moose Lodge will be holding a pancake breakfast that morning.
? The Shoal Creek Chapter of ABATE will hold a Ride & Drive for Rescue Fun Run to benefit Paws Care. Registration is from 11 a.m.-noon at EZ Street in Taylor Springs.

Sunday, October 26

? The Fayette County Extension Foundation will hold a soup luncheon from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Brownstown Elementary School cafeteria. Free-will donations will be accepted. The menu will include a choice of chili or vegetable beef soup, hot dog, carrots and celery, homemade desserts and drink. For more information, call the Extension Office, 283-2753.
? The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will hold a site tour of the Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area at the north end of Carlyle Lake. The guided tour, by personal vehicle, will give hunters and other interested people a chance to view the area prior to the waterfowl season, which begins on Nov. 8. Information will be provided on site regulations, hunting opportunities, crops planted and habitat projects undertaken in the past year. Those wishing to take the tour are to meet at 1 p.m. in parking lot No. 1, located south of the site office. ? Historical Vandalia Inc. will host an author's talk at 2 p.m. at the Fayette County Museum. Yvonne Scherer Pitts Meckfessel will talk about her new books, “Dust Bunnies” and “A Mother’s Promises.” There is no charge, and refreshments will be available.
Monday, October 27

? The Vandalia Lions Club will meet at Days Inn. The executive board meets at 5:15 p.m., and dinner and the regular meeting are at 6 p.m.
Tuesday, October 28

? The Vandalia Rotary Club meets at noon at Ponderosa Steakhouse.
? The office of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with the Vandalia Golden Circle Senior Center, will hold a Rules of the Road review course from 1-3 p.m. at the Senior Center, 616 W. Jackson St. The course is free and open to all ages.
? Evans Public Library will hold a story time at 4 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to attend.
? TOPS IL 2020 will meet in the Fayette County Hospital conference room. Weigh-in is from 5-5:30 p.m., with the meeting to follow.
? A Weight Watchers meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Vandalia; weigh-in is at 5 p.m. Visitors are welcome to attend the meeting free of charge.
? Rainbow Reflections, a grief support group, will meet from 6-7 p.m. in Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church, 127 N. Fourth St., Vandalia. Those planning to attend are asked to contact Mary Miller, 292-5366.
