SOCCER

The Vandalia soccer team was hoping to avenge last season’s regional tournament loss by beating Pana in last Thursday’s season-opener.
But the Panthers found plenty of empty net in beating Vandalia, 6-2.
Seniors Austin Durbin and Craig Spearman each scored in the South Central Conference matchup, and senior goalie Blake Torbeck saved 17 shots. Spearman assisted Durbin’s goal.
On Tuesday, the Vandals fell in a tight contest at Southwestern.
Durbin scored Vandalia's lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the SCC rival.
Southwestern added a goal in the last few minutes of the game to break a 1-1 tie.
Torbeck had seven saves in goal, and the Vandals return to action on Thursday for the home-opener against Effingham and next Monday at Centralia.
