Alumni awards well deserved

Over the years, we've done a good job of honoring the standout athletes who have worn the Vandalia Community High School colors. They get plenty of attention and awards during their competitive years – and in recent years a structure has been in place to nominate them for inclusion in the VCHS Hall of Fame.
That's great and their efforts should be recognized.
But what about the standout students that've passed through our high school and gone on to accomplish significant things outside the world of sports. We've produced plenty of those students, too. Yet the recognition has been lacking.
No more. Officials of the Vandalia Alumni and Friends Foundation Board have just announced the inaugural class of recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award. And they well represent the high caliber of scholars and business leaders that have graduated from VCHS.
Included in that first class of honorees are Warren "Hub" Sperry, Dr. Robert Shively and Dr. Jeff Alender. Those recipients will be honored during the foundation's all-school reunion on Saturday, Sept. 27, which is homecoming weekend for VCHS.
We applaud the first class of recipients, and praise them for their significant accomplishments since launching their education at VCHS. Their example can serve as a motivation to current and future students here. Indeed, our local schools have provided a launching pad for many students who have gone on to accomplish great things.
We look forward to honoring more of them in future years through the Distinguished Alumni Awards.
