Woman cited for DUI after pedestrian is hit

A Collinsville man was airlifted to a Springfield hospital after being hit by a vehicle on Saturday evening, and the driver of that vehicle was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Illinois State Police reported that at 7:06 p.m., Steven G. Cox was walking his dog on Lakewood Drive, northwest of Vandalia, when the accident occurred.
The state police said that Cox was running across the road to get the dog and was leaning over to pick up the dog when he was struck by a 2011 Jeep Cherokee driven by Peggy S. Beckmeier, 56, of Vandalia.
Cox was initially taken to Fayette County Hospital, then airlifted to Springfield Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
In addition to being ticketed for DUI, Beckmeier was cited for failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian.
