One dies in HS Apartments fire

A fire at High School Apartments early Saturday morning resulted in the death of one resident and the evacuation of all others.

The Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department was called to the apartment complex shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday for a report of smoke coming from the west side the building.

The sprinkler system extinguished most of the fire in a hallway and kept it from spreading.

Mayor Rick Gottman called the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency and Red Cross to give assistance to the evacuated residents, and 19 of them spent the night at the Vandalia Junior High School gym, where the Red Cross provided breakfast on Saturday morning.

The Brownstown Fire Department provided mutual aid assistance to the VVFD, which was on the scene through much of the morning hours.
