Lady Vandals can’t break skid at GHS

Vandalia had its best offensive output since mid-April, but a seventh-inning comeback fell just short on Monday in an 11-9 loss at Greenville in nonconference action.

After two quick outs in the seventh, the Lady Vandals got a run on sophomore Karlie Bright’s first career triple, and scored on a single by senior Kylie Sellers. Both players had two hits in the game.

Erin Smith’s sixth strikeout of the game ended the contest, but the result for Vandalia was much better than April 23’s 10-0 loss.

The Lady Vandals (5-17) looked like they would be on the way to breaking their losing streak – which stands at seven games – after taking a 6-1 lead going to the bottom of the third inning.

Greenville, however, scored four times in the third, twice in the fourth and four more times in the fifth to take the lead.

Senior Megan Godoyo struck out 11 in six innings for her seventh double-digit strikeout performance of the season.

VANDALIA – Senior Taylor Well drove home sophomore Karlie Bright twice for Vandalia’s only runs in last Friday’s 11-2 South Central Conference loss to Gillespie.

Well had a two-out single in the fourth and brought home a run on a fielder’s choice in the sixth.

Bright’s fourth-inning single and senior Megan Godoyo’s sixth-inning single were the only other base runners in the game, which saw Gillespie score in all but the sixth inning.

Vandalia (5-16, 1-4 SCC) struck out 11 times in the game.

Vandalia and Pana played another close game last Wednesday, but it was Pana which took the win, beating the Lady Vandals, 9-5, in nonconference action.

Junior Kelsey Swain and sophomore Karlie Bright each had an RBI for Vandalia (5-15) – which beat Pana, 6-5, on April 11 – and junior Madison Click scored twice.

Senior Megan Godoyo had 12 strikeouts – two short of her career-high – and only four of the runs allowed were earned, as the Lady Vandals committed four errors.

Pana led 8-0 after three innings, but Vandalia added its five runs over the next three frames. Adrianna Suter retired the side in order in the seventh to end the game.
