Weather doesn’t slow down week three action at speedway

By Kristopher Blankenship

This week, Fayette County Speedway fought Mother Nature and won.

Rain that hit the area on Thursday night tried to wash out racing this week but track promoter Charlie Depew and his crew worked on the facility to make for another great night of racing.

Although, it wasn’t easy.

The pits were muddy, and the track was soft. Early races had to deal with some rough areas and a bit of a slimy surface, but as the night wore on, the track slowly took shape.

At intermission, the crew used heavy equipment to refine the surface, and as the feature races rolled out, it was clear that all the tinkering had paid off.

What followed was some of the fastest racing the track has ever seen.

Modifieds, 16 cars

Welcome back, Mike Harrison.

The 2004, 2010 and 2011 UMP national champion had spent time as a regular racer here at Fayette County Speedway, but over the past few years has been a busy man winning races all across the country.

Back at the Fayette County Fairgrounds on Friday night, he wasn’t rusty at all.

A bit choppy and wet on bottom, drivers went to work.

Local Jake Draege started up front in Heat No. 1, and looked great in taking the win in the Draege Farms No. 7, one of the best looking cars at the track.

In heat No. 2, 2013 champion Larry Anderson made his return and walked away with the win, while the Dash was won by Cory Daugherty, with Anderson giving chase.

In the feature, Daugherty led early on until Harrison worked his magic, and won in convincing fashion.

B-mods, 16 cars

When the B-mods took the track, it was starting to take shape.

Heat No. 1 was taken by Billy Knebel Jr., Heat No. 2 was won by Ryan Eilers, who also won the dash.

Eilers has had an outstanding start to the season, becoming the class of the B-mod field and racing fast every time he takes the track.

Vandalia’s Caleb Miller isn’t too far behind, and has been knocking on the door.

This week’s feature was another duel, with Miller chasing Eilers with everything he had but Eilers edging him for the win.

This will be a matchup to watch, as in each race, Miller gets harder and harder for Eilers to fight off, and there’s no indication he’s giving up.

Notable: Jared Morrison suffered a hard crash in his heat race with moderate damage, but was able to make repairs and come from the back for a top five finish. Justin Durbin started to warm up with a strong heat race and a third-place finish in the feature.

Street stocks, 10 cars

There is becoming a trend, as Tony Walker has owned the track all season. He has been nearly untouchable through three weeks of racing, taking wins in every race he has entered.

Heat No. 1 was more of the same, as he jumped out early and never looked back, and Heat No. 2 saw Jacob Tompkins, a young up and coming racer, getting the win over Stephen Fohne.

In the feature, it was all Walker. On a fast track he put his foot down again and waved the checkered flag after the race.

After every win this year, he has picked one lucky child to receive a free racing shirt.

UMP Hornets, 15 cars

There were all new winners this week.

In Heat No. 1, David Wright battled it out with David Bolyard, and  in the end, Bolyard couldn’t get the grip to make the pass, so Wright brought home his first win of the season.

In Heat No. 2 rookie Brandon Buatte brought home his first-ever win, with Lynn Lash giving him a run for his money.

In the feature, several battled it out from the get-go, with Justin Clark taking his first victory of the season.

High school hornets, 6 cars

In the high school hornets, Jaekob Durbin took home the feature win after battling with Dawson Barker. Both of these young drivers are putting on a great show for the fans this year.

Additionally, the kids club is up and running, with something for the kids each week during intermission, and car counts are going up. It looks to be a spectacular racing season ahead.

The next event is regular racing this Friday. For more information, visit www.fayettecospeedway.com or like the track on Facebook.
