The Next Level: Graduate athlete roundup (April 24)

Many athletes who spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who recently made headlines.

Spencer Patton • Pitcher • Omaha Storm Chasers

•April 18 – Patton, a South Central graduate, picked up his third save of the season after pitching the final inning of a 3-2 win against Round Rock. The Kansas City Royals AAA prospect retired the three batters he faced in order.
•April 17 – Patton struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of relief during a 14-1 win against Round Rock.

Quenten Austin • Soph. • Carthage • Track

•April 18 – Austin, a Vandalia graduate, participated in the decathlon at the Augustana College Meet of Champions. His finishes in each of the 10 events follow:
•100-meter dash, 14th (11.98)
•Long jump, T-5th (20-3)
•Shot put, second (41-4 1/2)
•High jump, T-3rd (5-10 3/4)
•400-meter dash, ninth (53.04)
•110-meter hurdles, third (15.99)
•Discus, sixth (106-11)
•Pole vault, sixth (12-1 1/2)
•Javelin, second (160-1/2)
•1,500-meter run, fourth (4:41.93

Sierah Ruffner • Freshman • Greenville • Track

•April 18 – Ruffner, a Vandalia graduate, placed in a tie for fifth in the high jump at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet. She cleared 4 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Abby Hill • Junior • Greenville • Track

•April 18 – Hill, a St. Elmo graduate, placed fifth in the hammer throw at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet. She threw 130 feet, 1 inch.
 

Trevor Montgomery • Soph. • Greenville • Baseball

•April 19 – Montgomery, a Vandalia graduate, went 2-for-5, with a double and a run, in a 10-7 win against Iowa Wesleyan, and in game one, went 2-for-4, with two RBI.
•April 18 – Montgomery went 1-for-4, with a triple, RBI and run in a 3-2 win against Iowa Wesleyan.
•April 16 – Montgomery went 3-for-4, with an RBI and a run, in a 6-4 loss against MacMurray.
•April 12 – Montgomery hit a pair of solo home runs in a 3-for-5 day during an 11-7 loss to Webster.

Dathan Berning • Soph. • Greenville • Baseball

•April 21 – Berning, a Vandalia graduate, went 2-for-4, with a run, in a 7-6 loss to Spalding.
•April 19 – Berning went 1-for-3, with a run and a stolen base in a 4-1 win against Iowa Wesleyan, and in game two, he went 1-for-1, with a run and a walk.

Becca Oldham • Freshman • Greenville • Softball

•April 21 – Oldham, a Mulberry Grove graduate, went 2-for-5, with a double, triple, RBI and two runs, in a 25-5 win at Grinnell.
•April 19 – Oldham went 1-for-3, with a double and a run, and struck out seven in seven innings pitched, in a 3-2 win against Iowa Wesleyan.
•April 17 – Oldham went 2-for-2, with two doubles, two RBI and two runs, and struck out two in four innings pitched, in a 9-1 win at Blackburn. She was the winning pitcher. In game one, she went 2-for-2, with a double, two RBI and two runs.
•April 16 – Oldham went 1-for-2, with a double, in a 10-0 loss to Washington (MO.) University, and in game two, struck out four over seven innings in a 5-1 win.
•April 14 – Oldham went 2-for-3, with two RBI and two runs, and pitched three innings, in a 22-6 win against Principia, and in game one, she went 3-for-4, with a double, three RBI, two runs and two steals.

Harley Tompkins • Soph. • Parkland • Softball

•April 21 – Tompkins, a Mulberry Grove graduate, went 2-for-4, with a home run, four RBI and two runs, in an 8-5 win at Illinois Central College.
•April 17 – Tompkins went 1-for-2, with a double and two RBI, in a 9-2 loss to Kankakee Community College.
•April 16 – Tompkins went 2-for-4, with a home run and a double, three RBI and a run, in a 14-6 win against South Suburban College.

Macie Cain • Freshman • Danville Area CC • Softball

•April 16 – Cain, a South Central graduate, went 1-for-3, with an RBI and a run, during a 9-7 loss at Southeastern Illinois College.
