RAMSEY – The Lady Rams fended off a late comeback try by Hillsboro for their second win of the season last Saturday, and that helped them to a third-place finish in their own tournament.
Hillsboro scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but stranded two runners in scoring position, allowing Ramsey to take the 7-6 victory.
The Lady Rams scored at least one run in the second-sixth innings, and that consistent scoring helped them overcome an early 3-0 deficit.
Senior Whitney Moreland went 3-for-3 and also struck out six in a complete game from the pitcher’s circle.
The short-handed Lady Rams – who were missing three players who were on a band trip – spotted Hillsboro a three-run lead in the bottom of the first, but they came back with a bases-loaded walk in the second and three runs in the third.
Hillsboro scored two more runs in the bottom of the third, but Ramsey tied the game on Moreland’s RBI single.
Junior Abbi Cunningham hit an RBI single in the fifth, and freshman Nicole Riley hit an RBI double in the sixth for the Lady Rams.
The win was sandwiched in between a pair of losses in the tournament, with Ramsey falling to Stew-Stras, 14-1, and Arthur-Lovington, 16-1.
Stew-Stras was the tournament champion, and Arthur-Lovington was second after Stew-Stras won the matchup between the teams, 6-1.
