Two local JH teams advance at state

A pair of local junior high boys basketball teams have advanced in two different state tournaments.

The Patoka Junior High team won in the first round of the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Class S tournament, but lost to Pinckneyville, 60-54, on Monday night in semifinals.

Jered Cain had 31 points in the game.

Patoka closes the season at 22-5.

In Saturday’s first round, the Jr. Mohawks defeated Breese All Saints Academy, 54-41.

Cain had a triple-double, with 21 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists, and Michael Organ had a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

In the Illinois Elementary School Association Class A seventh-grade state tournament, Mulberry Grove (11-5) has made the third-place game.

The Jr. Eagles defeated  Bradley St. Joseph (15-5), 31-24, at St. Joseph Middle School on Saturday.
Cortland Latham paced Mulberry Grove with eight points, and Javion Wright was right behind with seven.

Mulberry Grove scored 17 first-half points to establish a seven-point lead that it would never lose.

Later that night in the semifinals, the Jr. Eagles were defeated by Annawan, 42-12.

Wright paced Mulberry Grove with five points as the Jr. Eagles struggled against Annawan’s defensive pressure.

Annawan (21-2) will meet Dieterich (21-2) for the championship, while Mulberry Grove will play Chrisman Scottland (21-5) for third place on Thursday at 6 p.m.
