Jr. Vandals to play for third in own tourney

VANDALIA – The Jr. Vandals will play for third place in their own eighth-grade tournament.

Vandalia was knocked off by St. Elmo on Tuesday in the championship semifinals of the 26th annual event. The third-place game is on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Vandalia Junior High, with the championship game to follow.

St. Elmo will meet Pana in that game, after Pana beat Central A&M on Tuesday.

Pana won the event in 2010 and 2012, but St. Elmo hasn't captured a championship since 2004.

For the Jr. Vandals, Curtis Gordon led in scoring against the Jr. Eagles with nine points.

Other scorers were: Kelly Jones (6), Richie Well (3), Alec Schroeder (2) and Preston Ruckman (1).

On Thursday at Vandalia Elementary School, the fifth- and seventh-place games will be played.

The seventh-place game will be at 5:30 p.m., and the fifth-place game will be at 6:45 p.m.

Teams in those games are Ramsey, Taylorville, Mulberry Grove and Staunton.

Full box scores were not received for all of Tuesday's games by press time.

On Monday, two county teams in the tournament both won to set up a county clash.

Vandalia beat Mulberry Grove, 53-23, and St. Elmo beat Taylorville, 43-25, at VJHS to set up a semifinal matchup between the two teams.

The Jr. Vandals were led by Alec Schroeder’s 11 points in the rout, and Curtis Gordon and Kelly Jones added 10.
Vandalia stormed out to a 26-5 lead after the first quarter and went ahead, 39-10, at halftime.

For Mulberry Grove, Jake Linnaberry and Michael Sloan each had eight points, and Josh Huhn added seven.

St. Elmo used a strong second half to cement its victory against Taylorville.

Klayton Kroll had 16 points and Landon Feezel added 14 for the Jr. Eagles, who scored 25 second-half points to extend their 18-12 halftime lead.

In action at VES on day one, Pana beat Ramsey, 53-25, and Central A&M beat Staunton, 46-14.
