Brownstown seventh-graders going to state tournament

VANDALIA — The Brownstown Jr. High seventh-grade girls basketball team qualified for the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 3A state tournament with a 24-10 victory against Roxana on Wednesday at the Vandalia Sectional.

Brownstown led 20-4 going into the fourth quarter on the strength of a strong defensive effort, which included 24 steals, and solid rebounding.

Dana Shelton led Brownstown with 11 points, while Deana Shelton added 14 rebounds and nine points. Fatima Viramontes had eight steals in the game.

The state tournament begins on Saturday at Central A&M Junior High in Assumption. Brownstown (16-5) will play at 10 a.m. against Eureka (21-1).

The winner advances to the 5 p.m. game against either Paris Mayo or Auburn, and the state finals are next Thursday.
