Lady Vandals beat Litchfield again

The Lady Vandals did little wrong last Thursday in defeating Litchfield for the second time of the season.

Allowing the Lady Panthers very few points on their serves and using a precise attack in the game, Vandalia came away with an easy 25-8, 25-12 victory.

“We didn’t make any mistakes that we could complain about,” said coach Allison Smith. “We’ve been focusing on only making one error and giving one point at a time.”

Only five times during the match did Litchfield serve twice a row, and it never had three straight serves.

Meanwhile, senior Abby Dugan had six straight serves at one point in the first set, including four consecutive aces.

“That says a lot of about Abby, because she missed some days earlier in the week (due to illness),” Smith said.

Two points after her string of aces – which gave Vandalia a 17-5 lead – the Lady Vandals killed off four straight points – two for senior RaeChelle Leiken, and one for seniors Austyn Krueger and Shelby Foster.

In the match, senior Sierah Ruffner led the team with 10 kills, and she was followed by Leiken and Krueger, who both had seven, for the Lady Vandals (19-1)

“They are really trying to stay focused and be determined to do things the right way every time,” Smith said. “I think (losing to) Pana played a big role in that.”

The game at Pana was Vandalia’s only loss coming into the game, and since then, the Lady Vandals had won four straight.

Vandalia opened a 6-0 lead in the second set and never led by less than five points. Six of the first eight points for the Lady Vandals came off of kills – including two for Ruffner and Kreuger.

The refined attack game has come from a specific drill that has been implemented into practices.

“We’ve been keeping practices like game situations,” Smith said. “If they play the JV in practice, they have to get all four points, or we start over.”
