Cougars win 4-3 to claim regional title

South Central won its first regional championship since 2010 by defeating Edwards County, 4-3, on Saturday at the Wayne City Regional.

The top-seeded Cougars wasted no time getting on the board, posting three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Senior Colby Bushue opened his 3-for-3 game with a single and a stolen base before scoring on a single by junior Fischer Tharp.

Senior Cole Armstrong reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.

Heath Hoffmann would then single, and senior Luke Krajefska drove him home with a hit.

Krajefska also picked up the win from the mound, tossing a complete game and striking out 12.

Larry Schoreck drove home Armstrong with a sacrifice fly in the third inning to put South Central ahead, 4-0.

Third-seeded Edwards County would come back in the fifth, however, scoring three times with two outs.

The Lions were able to get the tying run on base two different times in the top of the seventh inning, but Krajefska struck out Edwards County's cleanup hitter to end the game.

With the win, South Central advanced to the St. Anthony Sectional in Effingham.

The Cougars played Windsor, champions of the Moweaqua Regional, on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Results of that game will be posted at www.leaderunion.com on Thursday morning.

If the Cougars won that game, they will continue on to Saturday's 10 a.m. sectional final against either Stew-Stras or St. Anthony.
