Ulmer places fifth at state

CHAMPAIGN – Senior Levi Ulmer led a group of five wrestlers at the individual state wrestling tournament, placing fifth. Ulmer, who narrowly lost in the championship semifinals, ended up dropping to the fifth-place match, which on Saturday he won, 11-4, against Garrett Kestner of Camp Point. In that match, Ulmer secured his first points since the championship quarterfinals with a quick takedown of Kestner and continued on without much trouble to become the first Vandal to place since 2010, when Trevor Pyle took third. Ulmer led 4-1 after the first period and extended his lead to 8-3 by the end of the second. Earlier in the day, Ulmer was unable to score during the wrestle-back semifinals against St. Joe-Ogden’s Kenny Lindsey, who won the bout, 1-0. Ulmer had previously defeated Lindsey in the sectional finals. Senior Daniel Edwards was the only other Vandalia wrestler to have a bout on all three days, but he lost his final match of tournament in the wrestle-back quarterfinals. In that bout on Saturday morning, Edwards was defeated by Gage Hedges, 1-0. Freshman Dalton Blankenship (132) and sophomore Seth Purcell (145) each wrestled one match on day one and day two, and senior Dayin Godberson wrestled in the first round on day one. Full coverage from the state tournament will be published in this week’s edition of The Leader-Union, and many photos from the event will be posted at www.leaderunion.com during the week.
