Ramsey eighth-graders win regional

The Ramsey Junior High eighth-grade boys basketball team defeated Altamont, 35-27, on Tuesday to win a regional championship.

On Monday, the top-seeded Rams defeated Beecher City, 39-16. Ramsey had a first-round bye.

The Rams will face either Findlay Okaw Valley or Oblong at St. Elmo on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a sectional battle.

The Vandalia eighth-graders also had a first-round bye, but the Vandals lost to Pana, 29-27, on Monday.

St. Elmo (40-30 to Beecher City), Mulberry Grove (62-24 to East St. Louis Jackson) and Brownstown (43-22 to Pana Sacred Heart) all lost first-round games on Jan. 29.

Many sites had to postpone tournament dates until Monday because of the winter storm that ravaged the area last week.

Vandalia Junior High volleyball teams win

The Vandalia Junior High eighth-grade volleyball team defeated Litchfield, 25-21, 25-12, on Monday night.

Kadi Metzger had 10 points, five service aces and one kill; Jori Wagner had 10 points and three service aces; Johanna Walton had four points and one service ace; and Mercedes Reynolds had three points, three kills and two service aces.

For the seventh-graders, they won, 25-18, 25-9. In the first set, Leah Francis served eight straight, including four service aces, to help the Lady Vandals win.

In the second set, Makalya Tinker outdid Francis by serving 14 in row with seven service aces.

On Tuesday, the Lady Vandals eighth-graders beat Greenville, 25-21, 25-21.

Metzger had eight points, five kills and two service aces; Madison Click had eight points, one kill and one service ace; Ali Sasse had six points and one kill; and Jessica Sullens had five points, one kill and one service ace.
The seventh-graders also won, defeating the Lady Comets, 25-8, 25-21.

Rylee Wollerman earned the match point, and Karlie Bright opened the match with nine straight serves. Tinker served 10 straight times in the first set, and Faye Etcheson served 12 straight in the second set, earning five aces during that stretch.

Both teams will play at Hillsboro on Thursday.

Fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball scores

On Tuesday, the Vandalia fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball teams played against Greenville.

The sixth-graders won, 23-21, with Jensen Hollinshead (8 points), Lindsay Dagen (4), Molly Kern (3), Emma Meyer (3), Sarah Bigelow (2), Mikayla Ruot (2) and Madison Klanke (1) scoring.

The fifth-graders lost, 31-9, with Sydney Austin (4), Olivia Marquardt (4) and Katie Tarkington (1) scoring.

The Vandalia fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball teams both defeated Pana on Monday.

For the sixth-graders, Emma Meyer (10 points), Lindsay Dagen (7), Jensen Hollinshead (6) and Molly Kern (2) scored in the 25-22 win.

For the fifth-graders, Olivia Marquardt (12) and Katie Tarkington (2) scored in the 14-13 victory.
