Julia F. McDowell, 89, of Vandalia, died at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Doug Wodtka officiating. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials: Friends & Families of Fayette County Hospital.
Mrs. McDowell was born on Sept. 22, 1921, in Vandalia, the daughter of Grover and Nellscene Willis Bennett. She married Glenn “Pat” McDowell on April 22, 1940; he died on Nov. 26, 1999.
She was co-owner of Pat’s Package Liquor Store and worked at Johnson, Stephens & Shinkle Shoe Factory for 26 years. She was a Christian, and she enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, and spending time with family.
She is survived by a son, Ronnie McDowell and his wife Jan of Vandalia; brothers, Charles Bennett and his wife Linda of Keyesport, Floyd Bennett and his wife Ilean of Decatur, and Grover “Doby” Bennett and his wife Evelyn of Vandalia; sister, Sue and her husband Paul Gilligan of Mahomet; grandson, Todd McDowell and his wife Christi of Vandalia; granddaughters, Kim and her husband Bill Frederick of Raleigh, N.C., and Jana and her husband Todd Shafer of Vandalia; great-grandchildren, Lyndsay and her husband Billy Doehring, Adam Shafer, Tessa Shafer, Gage McDowell and Jake McDowell, all of Vandalia; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, John Bennett and Dale Bennett; and sisters, Ruth Bennett and Betty Harrison.
