Elberta J. Ewbank, 82, of Vandalia, died at 6:22 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with the Rev. Kurt Simon officiating and with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia. There was no visitation. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Evans Public Library or First Presbyterian Church, both in Vandalia.
Miss Ewbank was born on Nov. 8, 1928, in Vandalia, the daughter of Lester and Mae Bryan Ewbank.
She was a traveling librarian, and she enjoyed reading and typing on her typewriter. She served in the Air Force. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Old Capitol Post 3862 and Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95, all of Vandalia.
She is survived by nieces, Pamela Jackson of Effingham, Lynn and her husband David Schmitt of Vandalia, Candy and her husband Rick Thacker of Eureka, Jodie Weaver of Vandalia and Judie Carnes of McLeansboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lodene Carnes; and twin great-nieces, Kristy Lynn and Holly Noel Lotz.
