Elizabeth C. ‘Betty’ Johnston, 97, Vandalia

Elizabeth C. “Betty” Johnston, 97, of Vandalia, and formerly of Waverly, died on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Waverly East Cemetery. A memorial reception will follow at the Waverly Senior Center. Mrs. Johnston was born on Jan. 29, 1913, in Slatedale, Pa., the daughter of Edwin and Dora Wise Gross. She married Dr. Charles “Doc” Johnston on June 18, 1938; he died on March 11, 1981.
She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania as a dental hygienist and then helped her husband, “Doc” Johnston, practice medicine and serve the Waverly area from the late 1930s until retirement in 1979. Upon retiring, Betty moved to Vandalia and stayed active in the stock market.
She is survived by a son, Dr. C.W. “Butch” Johnston and his wife Gwen of Vandalia; grandchildren, Chad Johnston and his wife Gretchen of New Berlin, and Travis Johnston and his wife Tiffany of Arlington Heights; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Anna and Olivia Johnston of Arlington Heights.
