Austin leads frosh/soph Vandals to South Central Conference title

Despite the sudden drop in temperature and high winds over the weekend, the Vandalia freshmen and sophomore track and field team was victorious at the frosh/soph South Central Conference Championships on in Litchfield on Saturday.

The Vandals won four events, with sophomore Qunten Austin playing an integral role in all. Austin started the day by taking first place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches. He then teamed up with Tim Ritchey, Blake Swofford and Ryan Ambuehl in the 4×100-meter relay. The same foursome that set a new school record last month at the Comet relays broke the record again, with a time of 47.54 seconds, bettering their time by .29.

Austin went on the win the 110-meter hurdles in 16 seconds flat and the 300-meter hurdles in 43.2, blowing away the competition.

Ambuehl also had an outstanding day, placing in four events. He took second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.6) and third in the triple jump at 37 feet, 1½ inches. He ran the 400-meter dash in 55.7, placing fourth.

Swofford placed third in the 100-meter dash, at 11.4 seconds. He placed fourth in the 200-meter dash at 25.1.

Vandalia scored 85 team points, edging Hillsboro (79) by six, Carlinville and Greenville tied for third with 72 points.

Quenten Austin clears the eighth hurdle in the 110-meter hurdles at the frosh/soph South Central Conference Championships on Saturday in Litchfield. Austin won the event with a time of 16 seconds.
