Alma L. Byers, 79, of Farina, died at 3:35 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home on West Wood Street in Decatur. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Decatur. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Byers was born on July 6, 1929, in Missouri, the daughter of Curnet and Mabel Jesse. She married J.E. “Gene” Byers on Aug. 25, 1946, in Decatur.
She was a graduate of Decatur High School, and was the Decatur Township clerk in Decatur from 1968 until her retirement in 1989. After retirement, she moved to Oakland, Ill. She was a past member and officer of many organizations, including the Salvation Army, United Way, County and Township Officials of Illinois, Women’s Republican Study Club, Women of the Moose Chapter No. 36, Elks Ladies No. 407, American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 105, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 99, Kappa Delta Phi Sorority and LaSociete de Femme Cabane No. 287. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Decatur.
She is survived by daughters, Kay and her husband Darrell Pryor of Brownstown, and Linda and her husband Chris Goodman of Oakland, Ill.; sister, Laura Jean Walser of Holly Ridge, N.C.; grandchildren, Amanda Michel of Vandalia, Haley Kiser of Villa Grove and Jesse Goodman of Oakland, Ill.; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Bayles, Alexis Kiser and Lauren Kiser.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Bill Jesse and Jim Jesse.
