George “Lyle” Jones, 82, of Vandalia, died at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2009, at the family residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joe Lawson officiating. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
Mr. Jones was born on June 25, 1936, in Vernon, the son of George and Nora Holt Jones.
He was a retired superintendent of the Vandalia Water Plant; he worked at the plant for 38 years, and was the superintendent for the last 23 years. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Leary in 1942. He was a member of Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia. His hobbies included auctions and mushroom hunting with his two nephews.
He is survived by his best friend of 43 years, Helen Edwards, and her children, Debbie and her husband Bill Opel, Pam and her husband Rob Mars, and Randy Edwards and his wife Janis; son, Steve and his wife Sara Ann Jones of Altamont; daughter, Karen Austin and her friend Joe Blunt of Sandoval; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Gertrude Sears of Plattsville, Colo.; and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lyndon; sister, Laura; and brothers, Herbert, Henry, Charles and Claude.
