Anson “Mac” McElroy, 69, of Greenville, died at 9:08 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville, with Darryl Bolen officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Greenville. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials: The family.
Mr. McElroy was born on April 23, 1939, in Christian County, the son of William Andrew and Etta Aretta Forbes McElroy. He married Nancy L. Vaughn on Aug. 14, 1971, at First Christian Church in Greenville.
He grew up in Brownstown and attended Brownstown schools. He joined the Army on March 26, 1963, in St. Louis and rose to the rank of Spc. 5, serving overseas for one year, four months and 29 days. He was honorably discharged on March 16, 1965, at Ft. Hamilton, N.Y., and served in the Army Reserves until March 25, 1969. He was a mechanic for Suess Farm Supply, worked for Sievers Farm Supply in Edwardsville, worked on hydraulic cranes in Freeport, Texas, for Pape Equipment, and worked for many area farmers. He was a member of First Christian Church in Greenville.
He is survived by his wife; children, Shawna L. and her husband Tracy Nickel of Greenville, and Brian McElroy and his wife Loretta of Greenville; special niece, Teresa and her husband Kelly Edgar of Greenville; grandchildren, Aeron Davis, Marshall McElroy, Kirsten McElroy, Alexandria Nickel, Cameron Nickel, Nichol Edgar, Cody Edgar, Alyssa File and Caryssa File; brother, Elwin McElroy of Cowden; and sisters, Marcello Carroll of Manito, and Helen Laverne Sawyer of Copperas Cove, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William Kenneth McElroy; and sister, Ruth Stotts.
