Joyce Eyestone, 85, Virginia

Joyce Eyestone, 85, of Stafford, Va., and formerly of Brownstown and St. Elmo, died on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Kessel Funeral Home in St. Elmo. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, St. Elmo. Visitation will be held an hour before services at the funeral home. Memorials: St. Elmo Historical Society.

Mrs. Eyestone was born on July 14, 1923, in St. Elmo, the daughter of Harlan D. “Pete” and Veneta C. Askins Bennett. She married Charles “Charlie” Eyestone on July 12, 1941.

As a young lady, she worked at the Elmo Theater, and her photo was in the Carl Soltz Studio window for many years. She graduated from St. Elmo High School in 1941. During World War II, her husband was injured, and she worked at the Kellogg plant and at a bakery in Battle Creek, Mich., where they were living during his recovery. She was the secretary at Brownstown Elementary School form 1956 to 1957, when her health forced her into early retirement. She relocated to Stafford, Va., in 1989 to be with her son and his family, and she became a member of Register Chapel Methodist Church in Stafford.

She is survived by a son, Scott Eyestone and his wife Celina of Stafford, Va.; and grandsons, Brent Eyestone, and Mark Eyestone and his wife Lane, both of Fredericksburg, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Jack Bennett.
