Like nothing else our community has done in the recent years, the soon-to-be-installed Looking For Lincoln storyboards will tell visitors the fascinating story of Vandalia’s intersection with Abraham Lincoln.
The 10 wayside exhibits will each consist of several graphic images, a rubbing medallion and stories about Lincoln during the years he served in the legislature here. Some of the stories will be familiar to local residents, but – thanks to diligent research by Vandalia historian Dale Timmermann – many will be new revelations about the man who launched his political career here and went on to become our nation’s 16th president.
After months of preparation, the storyboards will be dedicated this Sunday in a 3 p.m. ceremony at Vandalia City Hall. In addition to local dignitaries, the dedication will feature Nicky Stratton, past director of the Looking For Lincoln Heritage Coalition.
If you appreciate the part Lincoln has played in our community, make time this Sunday to attend the dedication ceremony. You’ll be part of the launch of a significant new chapter in Vandalia’s outreach to tourists. And you might even learn something new about our most famous former resident.
