Robert J. Elder, 57, of St. Elmo, died on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Kessel Funeral Home in St. Elmo. Burial was in Liberty Cemetery, Brownstown. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials: The family.
Mr. Elder was born on Oct. 3, 1951, in Sterling, the son of Rollie A. and Ethel N. Markham Elder. He married Terry Kay Oiler on Oct. 10, 1968, in Kahoka, Mo.
He served six years in the Army Signal Corps during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of sergeant E5. He was employed by Pony Express Courier Service for 10 years. He was of the Baptist faith, was a member of Old Capitol Post No. 3862 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and enjoyed gardening, eBaying, mowing and spending time with and taking care of his mother and family.
He is survived by his wife; mother, of Brownstown; daughters, Krista Elder and her fiancé Steve Austin of St. Elmo, and Ginger and her husband Les Foster of Bryan, Texas; son, Robert Elder and his wife Vicki of rural St. Elmo; grandchildren, Zakk Elder, Jozsef Morrison, Kloe Foster and Helen Elder; sisters, Pat and her husband Floyd Mitchell of Sumner, and Debbie and her husband Greg Sidwell of Brownstown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Rollie “Butch” Elder and William Elder; and sisters, Sandra Pitts and Donna "Sissy" Johnson.
