Walter S. Gerrish, 72, of Patoka, died on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Day Funeral Home in Patoka, with the Rev. David Rogers officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday. Memorials: Patoka Fire and Ambulance Department.
Mr. Gerrish was born on Feb. 5, 1936, in Patoka, the son of Charles V. and Iva M. Huddleston Gerrish. He married Norma J. Burchell on Dec. 29, 1956, in Kentucky.
He grew up in Patoka and then lived in Rapid City, S.D.; Pontiac, Ill.; and Iraan, Texas; and Hobbs, N.M. He retired and moved back to Patoka in 1998. He worked for the Patoka Oil Field in Patoka; at the federal government missile site in Rapid City, S.D.; for Pontiac Rock Quarry and John Lo Picallo Excavation Co. in Pontiac for 22 years; for Oil Co. in Iraan, Texas; and Nalco Chemical in Iraan, Texas, and Hobbs, N.M. He was a member of the Iraan Christian Church since 1984, a former member of the Iraan Masonic Lodge, and a member and past master of Patoka Masonic Lodge No. 613. He enjoyed raising roses, gardening, fishing and mushroom hunting.
He is survived by his wife; son, Kevin Gerrish of Houston, Texas; daughters, Tammy and her husband Jim Tribley of Fairbury, Debbie and her husband Tom Spence of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Charlotte and her husband Don Ellison of EuClair, Wis.; brother, Carl Gerrish and his wife Becky of Patoka; sister, Wanda and her husband Stan Edwards of Centralia; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Virgil Gerrish; and sisters, Rosemary McKeon and Maxine Gerrish.
