Two people died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident south of Vandalia on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Illinois State Police, the accident resulted in the deaths of Roger D. Johnson, 62, of Taylorville, and Betty G. Bowker, 72, of Edinburgh, Ind.
Johnson was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident, and Bowker was a backseat passenger in the vehicle driven by Kimberly M. Streeval, 44, also of Edinburgh.
According to the state police, Johnson was driving northbound on U.S. Route 51 about a mile south of town when his 1999 Buick LeSabre drifted into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by Streeval.
Johnson and Bowker were pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen.
Streeval was airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and two passengers in her vehicle were also transported from the scene for treatment.
Morgan G. Bowker, 13, of Indianapolis, Ind., was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and later transferred to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Janet L. Bowker, 51, also of Indianapolis, was taken by ambulance to Fayette County Hospital. Both were treated at the scene by Fayette County Hospital Ambulance Service personnel.
The Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene to extricate Streeval and Johnson. They were at the scene for about two hours.
Route 51 was closed for about 2 hours.
