E. Fred Bird, 90, Greenville

E. Fred Bird, 90, of Greenville, died at 10:50 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at Cardinal Hill in Greenville.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville, with Darryl Bolen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Greenville. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials: Alzheimer’s Foundation or First Christian Church in Greenville.

Elmer Fred Bird was born on May 31, 1918, in Pittsburg, Kan., the son of Arthur Merle and Phoebe Shoemaker Bird. He married Hazel Marie Weiss on May 1, 1940; she preceded him in death. He married Dorothy R. Ammann on Aug. 17, 1985, in Greenville; she died on Oct. 10, 2000.

In his teens, Mr. Bird moved to the Greenville area, where he grew up and worked on several dairy farms. He later worked at Coates Steel Ball Factory for more than 32 years, retiring in 1980. He also farmed. In retirement, he loved to dance.

He is survived by his children, Lucy Hughes of Litchfield, Connie Mowrer of Omaha, Neb., and Kenneth Bird and his wife Cheri of rural Greenville; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; brothers, Charles, Merle and Ivan Bird; sisters, Hettie Walters, Goldie Volkay, Etta Bird and his twin sister, Fern Bunch; and grandchildren, Patrick Bird and Sherry Lewey.
