Glen N. ‘Doug’ Townsend, 89, Vandalia

Glen N. ‘Doug’ Townsend, 89, of Vandalia, died at 7:50 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at South Hill Cemetery in Vandalia, with the Rev. Robert Weaver officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95. Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Donors choice.

Mr. Townsend was born on July 7, 1919, in Brownstown, the son of Oscar and Nellie Francois Townsend. He married Marie Bloom on June 13, 1946, in Athens; she died in 1985.

He had been employed by the state of Illinois, and he served in the Navy during World War II. He was affiliated with the Baptist faith, and was a member of Eagles Aerie No. 3901 of Vandalia and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3862 of Vandalia.

He is survived by brothers, Charles Townsend and his wife Linda of Vandalia, Elmer Townsend of Gays, Jack Townsend and his wife Laverne of Kell; and sister, Hazel Grames of St. Elmo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, seven brothers and three sisters.
