Harold R. Miles, 87, of Vandalia, died at 1:55 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at First Christian Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Linda Towbridge officiating. Burial with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: First Christian Church in Vandalia.
Mr. Miles was born on Oct. 9, 1920, in Bethany, Mo., the son of Sherman R. and Muriel Hensley Miles. He married Helen Mae Baley on Oct. 24, 1940, in Auxvasse, Mo.; she died on Feb. 21, 2006.
He was a mechanic and owner of Harolds Dalee Service Station in Vandalia. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor, life member of Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia, member of First Christian Church in Vandalia, an elder emeritus at First Christian Church, a Boy Scout leader and Sunday school teacher, and he loved to square dance.
He is survived by a daughter, Patti and her husband Danny White of Greenville; son, John Miles and his wife Kathy of Eldorado Hills, Calif.; sister, Mary Ellen Bass of Columbia, Mo.; grandchildren, Misty Ulmer, Chris Hedgpeth, Mark Miles and Andrew Miles; stepgrandson, Shannon White; six great-grandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Bobbie Jo Miles; brother, Ralph Miles; and sister, Verda Lois Miles.
