Eugene L. Papes, 80, died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2008 at St. Anthonys Hospital in Alton. Born June 19, 1928 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of John and Veronica (Novak) Papes. He retired November 30, 1994 from Owens Illinois Glass after 42 years of service and was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Brighton. He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and was a lifetime member of the Alton VFW Post 1308. He loved to fish and loved and adored his grandchildren. He married the former Ingrid Schmeer on April 10, 1954 in Vandalia. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Lisa Maag and her husband Gregory of Alton, a son, John Papes and his wife Deborah of Castle Rock, CO, two grandchildren, Madelyne and Matthew Maag and two sisters, Irene Stone and Helen Haegler. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Edmund Papes and six sisters, Anne Tomko, Elizabeth Finley, Julia Elam, Caroline Freeman, Frances Roberts, and Virginia Hoover. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday with a rosary service at 5:00 p.m. and a VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team walk through at 5:30 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Brighton. Father Raphael Paul will officiate. Burial will be at Fair Lawn Cemetery in Vandalia at 12:45 p.m. Thursday with military rites by the Vandalia American Legion. Memorials may be made to the VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
