Judge appoints Ruot to circuit clerk post

Longtime Fayette County Deputy Circuit Clerk Mary Sue Ruot on Friday was named clerk pro tempore following the retirement of Circuit Clerk Marsha Wodtka on Thursday.

Chief Judge of Fourth Judicial Circuit, S. Gene Schwarm, made that appointment in an administrative order issued at 8 a.m. Friday.

In that order, Schwarm said that since the county board has not yet acted to fill the vacancy, he was making the appointment because it is necessary to provide for the continuing operation of the officein order that the business of the court may proceed without unnecessary delay. He also cited Ruots 26 years of experience as deputy, which has made her intimately familiar with the operations and functions of the office.

The law requires that the county board fill the vacancy within 60 days of Wodtkas retirement on July 31. At the July meeting of the county board, Chairman Steve Knebel said the board would not be prepared to vote on an appointment until the August or September meeting.

Im pleased with the appointment, Ruot told The Leader-Union on Friday. Im comfortable with it, and Im looking forward to the challenge.

Ruot is the Democratic candidate for the circuit clerks position in the general election in November. She will be challenged by Republican Nona Nonie Beckman.
