Nelvin L. Williams, 81, of Godfrey and formerly of Ramsey, died at 1:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Elder Care in Alton.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Ramsey, with the Rev. Glenn Sparks officiating. Burial was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, rural Ramsey, with military rites accorded by Anderson-Scroggins American Legion Post No. 460 of Ramsey. Visitation was held 90 minutes before services on Tuesday at the church. Miller Funeral Home in Ramsey was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: First Baptist Church of Ramsey Building Fund or St. Anthonys Hospital Hospice in Alton.
Mr. Williams was born on Oct. 26, 1926, in Ramsey, the son of Hugh J. and Kathleen Elizabeth Kate Spires Williams. He married Glova Lovina Halford in Nov. 24, 1965, in Alton.
He was a retired farmer, was a member of Anderson-Scroggins American Legion Post No. 460 of Ramsey and the Fayette County Farm Bureau, and a member and past president of Fayette Service Co. He served in the Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Janice and her husband Melvin Edwards of Godfrey, and Leslie and her husband Carl Craig of Manchester, Tenn.; grandchildren, Tim, Marie, Mike, Jason, LeeAnne and Jacob; and seven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Wesley, Steven, Lauren, Logan, Kyla and Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Blair, in 1991; and two brothers.
