George R. Blackerby, 81, of Ramsey, died at 5:48 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at St. Anthonys Memorial Hospital in Effingham
Graveside services with military rites accorded by Anderson-Scroggins American Legion Post No. 460 of Ramsey will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Ramsey Cemetery, with the Rev. Norris Price officiating. Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in Ramsey. Memorials: Anderson-Scroggins Post No. 460 Veterans Memorial Wall Fund.
Mr. Blackerby was born on Sept. 14, 1926, in Herrick, the son of William Alexander and Anna Fern Frailey Blackerby. He married Cleo Marie Elmore on Dec. 22, 1945, in Ramsey; she died on March 11, 2007.
He was a retired roadmaster for Norfolk Southern Railroad, and was a member of Anderson-Scroggins American Legion Post No. 460 of Ramsey and Clover Leaf Masonic Lodge No. 999 of Herrick. He served in the Army during World War II.
He is survived by a son, George R. and his wife Georgia Blackerby of Vandalia, daughter, Brenda and her husband Dave Benhoff of Ramsey; sister, Helen Elberson of Marshall, Ark.; grandchildren, Marci Barth, Robbie Blackerby, Julie Moreland, Kyle Blackerby and Clint Benhoff; great-grandchildren, Whitney, Chase, Chelsea, Konner, Blake, Adam, MacKenzie, Brooke and Ty; and special friend, Freda Clark of Herrick.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and one sister.
