O.D. Mahaffey, 75, of Cowden, died at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Herrick Christian Church in Herrick, with Pastor Richard Corwin officiating. Burial with military rites by Sarver-Guthrie American Legion Post in Herrick was in Myers Cemetery in Herrick Township, Shelby County. Visitation was held on Sunday afternoon at Wallace-Carroll Funeral Home in Herrick. Memorials: To the familys wishes.
Mr. Mahaffey was born on June 20, 1933, in Wheeler, the son of Harry O. and Harriett L. Baker Mahaffey. He married Wanda M. Wallace on Sept. 1, 1955, at Herrick Christian Church.
He was reared in Wheeler, attended a county grade school and graduated from Newton High School. He was a 30-year shipping employee at Caterpillar in Decatur, retiring in 1985. He served in the Army during the Korean War, and was a member of Sarver-Guthrie American Legion Post.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Dale Mahaffey and his wife Pam of Cowden, and Monty Zonk Mahaffey and his wife Marsha of Cowden; brothers, Gene Mahaffey of Decatur, Donald Mahaffey and his wife Darlene of Montrose, and Roy Mahaffey of Sigel; granddaughters, Rhiannon Mahaffey and Lexie Mahaffey; stepgranddaughter, Laura and her husband Junior of Cowden, and Jennifer and her husband Brock Ward of Cowden; and five great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Archie and Herschal Mahaffey; and grandson, Douglas Mahaffey.
