Veta Black, 85, of Ramsey, died at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2008, at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Miller Funeral Home in Ramsey. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Cowden. Visitation was held on Sunday evening at the funeral home. Memorials: Oak Grove Cemetery Fund.
Mrs. Black was born on May 5, 1923, in Pana, the daughter of Thomas J. Leigh and Irena Mitilda Rhoades Leigh Cole. She married William R. Black on Feb. 15, 1938, in East St. Louis; he died on May 8, 1995.
She was a retired employee of Johnson, Stephens & Shinkle Shoe Factory, Altamont Garment Factory and Head Start. She was a member of Church of Christ in Cowden and Golden Circle Senior Citizens of Ramsey, and was affiliated with Four Mile Christian Church in rural Brownstown.
She is survived by a son, Mark Black of Ramsey; daughter, Lucille Lucy Haywood of Vandalia; brother, Major Leigh of Findlay; sister, Ida Brown of Fillmore; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, William R. and Melvin Black; daughter, Marilyn Smith; five brothers; one sister; and two grandsons, Bradley Joe Jackson and Troy L. Black.
