For VCHS juniors Kayla Houston, Kris Stunkel, Paige Dodson and Ashley Durbin, 4×400=state championship.
The Lady Vandal fouresome shocked the field in the 1,600-meter relay Saturday at the IHSA Girls State Meet, claiming the first VCHS girls state title in school history by shattering the school record for the second day in a row with a blistering first-place time of 4:03.47.
The Lady Vandals came into the weekend with No. 6 seed and hopes of making the finals and earning a medal. But after obliterating their school record with a preliminary time of 4:06.39 Friday – good for second in their heat and third overall – thoughts of a state title crept into the Lady Vandals’ heads.
Still, nobody could have forseen VCHS’s latest school-record time – or a victory by nearly 1 1/2 seconds. ‘
‘It feels so great,’ said a deliriously excited Houston after the race, echoing her teammates’ sentiments. ‘I’m so estatic… Oh my gosh – it’s so surreal what just happened.’
Many more details will be available in this week’s sports section, which will be printed Wednesday afternoon.
