Mary Alice Phillips, 71, of Altamont, died at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at her home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at First United Methodist Church in Altamont, with the Rev. Jeff Van Dyke officiating. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park in rural Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at Gieseking Funeral Home in Altamont and one hour before services on Friday at the church. Memorials: Lincolnland Hospice or donors choice.
Mrs. Phillips was born on Sept. 11, 1936, in Effingham County, the daughter of William and Ruth Rush Morgan. She married Lyle Emmet Bebe Phillips on May 13, 1955, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham.
She worked at Bill Tulchs Store in Effingham and was a teller at Effingham State Bank for 15 years. She was a homemaker and a dairy farmers wife for almost 53 years. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Altamont, where she played the piano and sang in the church choir. She played for and sang at weddings and special occasions for family and friends. In high school, she sang in the choir and was an accompanist for the chorus. She was crowned the Effingham High School Holiday Dance queen in her senior year.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Doug Phillips and his wife Mishy of Graysville, Tenn., and Joe Phillips and his wife Diana of Effingham; daughters, Kathleen Phillips of Effingham, Diane and her husband Harry Butch Claar of Effingham, and Linda and her husband Travis Smith of Gadsden, Ala.; brothers, Loren Morgan and his wife Jackie of Effingham, Bill Morgan and his wife Peg of Garrett, and Delbert Morgan of Effingham; and grandchildren, Cody Phillips, Shelby Phillips, Morgan Phillips, Wyatt Phillips, Lyle Claar, Catelyn Smith and Connor Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lisa Phillips; and brother, Charlie Morgan.
