Led by first-place finishes by Drew Bell and Drew Stewart, the VCHS boys track team put together one of its best performances of the season Tuesday, placing fourth out of eight teams at the Cumberland Invitational.
Senior Josh Goen added a fine all-around performance in a number of events, helping the Vandals score 66 points, as they finished behind meet champion St. Anthony (110), Casey-Westfield (81) and Paris (76) and ahead of Arcola (62), Fairfield (60), Altamont (59) and Cumberland (44).
Bell claimed first place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:43.87, while Stewart claimed the discus title with a toss of 109 feet, 10 inches.
Goen was a busy man for the Vandals, taking second in the triple jump (37-8) and third in the long jump (17-4 1/2), in addition to teaming up with Andy Koonce, Jon Denning and Bell on Vandalia’s second-place 1,600m relay team (3:58.81).
The Vandals also got third-place showings from Angel Osorio (high jump, 6-0) and its 800m relay team (1:43.68), which included Osorio, Michael Galletto, Cody McGee and Codee Street.
Stewart (shot, 37-10 1/2) and Denning (1,600m, 4:59.12) chipped in fourth-place finishes, while Osorio tacked on a point for the Vandals with a fifth-place time in the 200m (24.14).
Adding sixth-place finishes for Vandalia were: Matt Grove (triple jump, 33-1), Austin Schukar (3,200m, 12:21.40) and Andy Koonce (400m, 58.18). The Vandals’ 400m relay team – McGee, Street, Galletto and Cody Cortelloni – also had a sixth-place time, clocking in at 51.12 seconds.
The Vandals will return to action Friday at the Greenville Relays.
