Marvin W. ‘Wiley’ Garner, 68, of Vandalia, died at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Salem, with the Rev. Justin Olisaemeka officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery in Salem, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post No. 128 of Salem. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia, and an hour before services on Tuesday at the church. Memorials: American Diabetes Association or American Lung Association.
Mr. Garner was born on Nov. 25, 1939, in Salem, the son of Marvin C. and Faye Costilow Garner. He married Virginia Lee Garner on Aug. 8, 1964, in Salem.
He was a retired captain at Vandalia Correction Center, and he also worked at H&R Block and taught law enforcement classes at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus.
He is survived by his wife; son, Brian Garner of Vandalia; mother, of Metropolis; sisters, Mary and her husband Jim Roberts of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kathy and her husband Wayne Johnson of Metropolis; brothers, Mark Garner and his wife Cris of Ulin, Robert Garner and his wife Debbie of Metropolis, and Gregory Garner and his wife Carolyn of Metropolis.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers.
