Larry R. Coughlin, 67, of St. Elmo, died at 7:15 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2008, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Mr. Coughlin was born on Oct. 9, 1940, the son of Hugh and Golda Lambird Coughlin. He married Patsy G. Meseke on May 17, 1984.
He was a master sergeant criminal investigator for District 12 of the Illinois State Police for 24 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 420 in St. Elmo, Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts No. 7676 of Altamont and St. Elmo Golf Club, and he retired in 1984 as member and president of the St. Elmo Board of Education. He was very active and enjoyed sports, coaching Little League for more than 16 years and running the high school basketball scoreboard for more than 20 years. He was an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Julie and her husband Dennis Duckwitz of St. Elmo; sons, Barry Coughlin of St. Elmo, Troy Walker and his wife Hannah of St. Elmo, and Tony Walker and friend Samantha McCormick of Altamont; five grandchildren; brothers, William Coughlin and his wife Norma of Xenia, Danny Coughlin and his wife Nancy of Xenia and Kenny Coughlin and his wife Sue of Centralia; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
