Charles H. Bernhardt, 85, of Marion and formerly of Fayette County, died at 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Gerald Cowan presiding. Following the service, military rites will be accorded at the funeral home by Veterans of Foreign Wars Heyde-Pillow Post No. 1301 of Marion, American Legion Post No. 147 of Marion and the Illinois National Guard. Burial will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in St. Peter.
Mr. Bernhardt was born on March 26, 1922, in New Haven, Ind., the son of Walter and Matilda Fischer Bernhardt. He married Margaret E. Harrison on Aug. 23, 1952, at St. Peter Lutheran Church.
He attended school in Farina and was a 1941 graduate of Farina High School. After graduation, he entered the Army, beginning service during World War II on Dec. 18, 1942. He served overseas with Co. D, 319th Medical Battalion in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged at the rank of corporal on Dec. 29, 1945.
He was a partner in the family business, Bernhardt Brothers, a hardware store in St. Peter, for 25 years. In 1970, he moved to Marion and began working as a salesman for Ohio Valley Hardware in Evansville, Ind.; he retired from that position in 1987. After retirement, he worked part-time for Pyramid Lumber in Carbondale. He was a member of Church of Christ in Marion.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Kay Bernhardt of Tampa, Fla.; sons, David Bernhardt and his wife Bonnie of Marion, Alan Bernhardt and his wife Patti of Bradenton, Fla., and Berry Bernhardt and his wife Tonisha of Chicago; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Wanda Tuft of Peoria; brothers, Don Bernhardt and his wife Mary Jane Bernhardt, and Dean Bernhardt and his wife Kathy, both of Vandalia; other extended family members; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, LeRoy Bernhardt.
