James J. Mays, 33, of Patoka, died on Friday, March 14, 2008, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Services were to be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Pentecostal Church in Patoka, with the Revs. Sam Hester and Gary Barnett officiating. Burial was to be in Patoka Cemetery. Visitation was held on Sunday evening from 5-8 p.m. and two hours before services on Monday, both at the church. Day Funeral Homes Ltd. of Patoka was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Mays was born on July 14, 1974, in Decatur, the son of Clarence and Gladys Hull Mays. He married Tabitha L. Reaka on Sept. 7, 2002, in Carlyle.
He had lived in Patoka for seven years, moving there from Breese. He was employed at Porco Farms Inc. and had previously worked at UBC in Breese.
He is survived by his parents; wife; children, Anna Mays of Patoka, Trevor Mays of Patoka and Tristan Mays of Patoka, Shalonda Mays of Kell, Michael Staff of Centralia and Christopher Mays of Lincoln; brother, Clarence Mays Jr. of Centralia; sisters, Mercy Flannagan of Centralia and Annette Miller of Delhart, Texas; mother- and father-in-law, Peggy and her husband Cletus Hilmes of Patoka, and Teddy Reaka Sr. of Smithton; grandparents, Alma Hull of Sandoval, Hazel Day Baker of Fairview Heights and Verena Pike of Ottawa; and many nieces and nephews.
