Dr. L. Peter Basch, 85, North Carolina

Dr. L. Peter Basch, M.D., 85, of Fairview, N.C., and formerly of Patoka and Sun City West, Ariz., died on Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Fairview, N.C.

A funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Sandoval. Father Michael Mbonu will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Centralia. The family will receive friends after the Mass at St. Lawrence Church on Saturday. Day Funeral Homes in Sandoval and Patoka is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: St. Lawrence Catholic Church or donors choice. Dr. Basch was born on May 24, 1922, in the former Yugoslavia, the son of Hugo and Magdalena Basch. He married Anna Bauer on April 23, 1945; she died on Sept. 27, 2000.

Dr. Basch was a 1946 graduate of the University Medical School in Vienna Austria. He completed his post-graduate training in Austria and Atlantic City New Jersey. In 1951 he opened his medical practice in Patoka and continued his work for 35 years. He was a member of the Marion County & Illinois State American Medical Association. He was a charter fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians for 28 years and a Charter Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice for 22 years. He served as Chief of Staff, Head of Department of Family Practice, for 6 years. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees for All of St Mary’s Hospital for 11 years. He was a trustee for the Village of Patoka for 12 years and was honored as the Citizen of the Year of the village of Patoka in 1976. He was a member of St Lawrence Catholic Church in Sandoval and he served on the Parish Council for many years.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Abbott and her husband Sefton of Fairview, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Edwin Basch and his wife Katie of Centralia; nephew and spouse, Edwin Basch and his wife Barbara of Macomb; niece and spouse, Elizabeth Meredith and her husband Skip of New Baden; and great-nephews and great-niece, Christopher Meredith of New Baden, Joseph Basch of Centralia, Timothy Basch of Centralia, Timothy Basch of Macomb and Katie Meredith of St. Louis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and son, Peter, who was killed by a drunk driver in 1979.
