Carolyn G. Freeman, 93, of St. Elmo and formerly of Vandalia, died at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Friendship Manor in St. Elmo.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Delix Michel officiating. Burial will be in Mother of Dolors Catholic Cemetery in Vandalia at a later date. There is no visitation. Memorials: The family or Mother of Dolors Catholic Church.
Mrs. Freeman was born on April 26, 1914, in Pocahontas, the daughter of John and Veronica Novak Papes. She married Donald Freeman on Sept. 17, 1934, in Bloomington; he died in 1989.
She was a cook and waitress at the former Eakin Cafe in Vandalia and a cashier for Eisner Foods in Decatur. She was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia.
She is survived by sisters, Helen Hagler of Greenville and Irene Stone of Bunker Hill; brother, Eugene Papes and his wife Ingrid of Brighton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, John and Edmond; sisters, Ann Tompco, Frances Roberts, Elizabeth Finley, Virginia Hoover and Julie Elam; nephew, David Hoover; great-nephews, Byron Hoover and Lee Michael Davis; and great-niece, Rachel Hoover.
