Aileen June Schmitt, 79, of Vandalia, died at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at her residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at First Pentecostal Church in Vandalia, with the Revs. Daniel McDonald and Paul R. Cagle officiating. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation was held one hour before services on Sunday at the church. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: First Pentecostal Church in Vandalia or Fayette County Health Department Hospice.
Mrs. Schmitt was born on Aug. 26, 1928, in Vandalia, the daughter of Kenneth and Dana Koontz Brown. She married Wayne Gerald Schmitt on Dec. 29, 1946, in Vandalia. They celebrated their 61st anniversary on Dec. 29, 2007.
She was the former owner of The Sewing Basket and The Peddlers Trunk, both in Vandalia; was a member of First Pentecostal Church in Vandalia; and taught at Fayette Christian Academy in Vandalia. She was an avid reader, seamstress and quilter, and she enjoyed being a soloist at her church.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Ronald Schmitt and his wife Debra of Vandalia, Richard Schmitt and his wife Bambi of Grayslake, and Dennis Schmitt and his wife Carol of Vandalia; daughters, Diana Cole of Vandalia, Terri and her husband Larry Hoehne of Poteau, Okla., Patti and her husband Randy Engel of Farina, and Marcie and her husband Tom McCarty of Vandalia; brother, Wallace “Bud” Brown and his wife Ellen of Lawrenceville; grandchildren, Stacie and Ronnie Raines, Sarah Schmitt Bates and friend Jef Franklin, Darrell and Charlotte Cearlock, Nicholas and Michelle Smith, Zachary and Ida Cole, Joshua and Katie Schmitt, Benjamin Schmitt, Jami and Lyndell McCallister, Jamey and Jason Ruot, Jeremiah and Angel Schmitt, Tyler Schmitt, Timothy Schmitt, Ann and Richard Gates, Andrew Hoehne and Viktoria Boldis, Chris Hoehne, Melissa Hoehne, Rachel Engel, Emily and Kristofer Reynolds, Megan McCarty and Dana McCarty; great-grandchildren, Kirkland Bates, Madison Bates, Natalie Cearlock, Cora Cearlock, Amanda, Neil, Adrianna, Nicholas and Taryn Smith, Shardaney and Kenisha Moore, Natalie Schmitt, Cotey and Corey McCallister, Carson and Mikayla Ruot, Preston Schmitt and Zada Reynolds; and great-great-grandchildren, Brandon Slaughter and Air Moore.
She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, Delbert Bigler.
