Charles J. ‘Joe’ Owen, 86, of St. Elmo, died at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
No services are scheduled at this time. Memorials: St. Elmo Veterans’ Memorial Wall, P.O. Box 132, St. Elmo, Ill., 62458. Kessel Funeral Home in St. Elmo was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Owen was born on Nov. 19, 1921, in Fayette County, the son of Benjamin F. and Mary E. Rhodes Owen. He married Rosemary C. Mills on April 24, 1958, in St. Elmo.
He retired as an auto mechanic in 1983, having been employed by Stine Buick in St. Elmo, Dan Hecht Chevrolet in Effingham and Gillespie Motor Sales/Davis Chevrolet in St. Elmo. After his retirement, he was employed by Himes Electric Co. in St. Elmo. He was a past member of St. Elmo Odd Fellows Lodge and a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge No. 769 A.F.&A.M. He attended the Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Susan and her husband Max Hollinshead of St. Elmo; stepdaughter, Wilma Jenkins of Effingham; stepsons, Michael Stice of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Ray Scott and his wife Tina of St. Elmo; brother, Robert Owen and his wife Joanne of St. Elmo; sisters, Pauline Stokes of Brownstown, Catherine and her husband Neil McKaskey of Blue Springs, Mo., and Mary Belle McLean of Creve Coeur, Mo.; grandson, Cody Hollinshead of Wood River; 11 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Louise Adams and Erma Kennedy.
