John Irvin Behrends, 78, of Brownstown, died at 4:10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Friendship Manor in St. Elmo.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Brownstown, with military rites accorded by Brownstown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9770. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at Claggett Funeral Home in Brownstown. Memorials: Friendship Manor Alzheimer’s Unit or Fayette County Hospice for Alzheimer’s.
Mr. Behrends was born on Feb. 13, 1929, in Sefton Township, rural Brownstown, the son of John G. and Mary Hobbs Behrends. He married Sally A. Bergin on May 22, 1954.
He was retired from farming and milk hauling for Bone Brothers in Vandalia, and was a Korean War Army veteran. He was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 and Brownstown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9770. He was a past trustee for Sefton Township. He loved spending time with his family and friends, and he hosted the Behrends Neighborhood Picnic in Sefton for 37 years.
He is survived by his wife; son, John Behrends and his wife Krista of Normal; daughter, Karen and her husband Phillip Zimmerman of Effingham; brother, Martin Behrends and his wife Norma; sister, Elizabeth and her husband Richard Kasten of Brownstown; grandchildren, Shane and Nicole Zimmermann, and Kaitlyn and Johnnie Courtland Behrends; sister-in-law, Shirley Behrends; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William.
